RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A group trying to elect Republican attorneys general says it’s reserved nearly $4 million in advertising time this fall to help state Sen. Buck Newton win the job in North Carolina.

The Republican Attorneys General Association said Monday the $3.8 million for the campaign’s final five weeks on broadcast and cable stations is its largest so far.

Newton is a state senator from Wilson who won the GOP primary in March. He will take on Democrat Josh Stein of Raleigh, a former senator. The race is open because four-term Attorney General Roy Cooper is running for governor.

Stein had $1.5 million available as of late February.

Republicans occupy 27 of the 50 state attorneys general offices.

North Carolina voters haven’t elected a Republican attorney general in more than 100 years.
