RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A man authorities say was a mastermind of the kidnapping of the father of the North Carolina prosecutor who put him in prison is testifying that if he really wanted revenge, he would have had gang members kill the man immediately.
Kelvin Melton is on trial in federal court on a kidnapping charge. Prosecutors say the 51-year-old inmate orchestrated the abduction in 2014 from a smuggled cellphone behind state prison walls.
WRAL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1S9PDAU ) that Melton testified Friday that the plot which involved taking the victim to an Atlanta apartment and sending threatening texts to his family was too complex. Melton said “if I had done this for revenge, they would have handled this at the door.”
The father was rescued by FBI agents five days after he was kidnapped.
