SURF CITY, N.C. (AP) — Thirteen sea turtles are back at home in the waves after their release by workers at a sea turtle hospital on the North Carolina coast.
Local media outlets report that the turtles were released on the beach at Surf City northeast of Wilmington on Wednesday after treatment at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.
The turtles include a number of Kemps Ridley turtles who were stunned in cold water last winter off the New England and Carolina coasts.
There was also a 250-pound loggerhead named Wrangler who is estimated to be between 25 and 35 years old.
Wrangler was brought to the hospital covered with lesions and shark bites. She gained about 80 pounds during her rehabilitation.
