BOLIVIA, N.C. (AP) — Brunswick County’s smoking ordinance has been amended to include a ban against e-cigarettes.

Media outlets report the ordinance was changed at Monday’s commissioners meeting. The ordinance regulates smoking inside county-owned buildings, and had not previously addressed e-cigarettes.

County spokeswoman Amanda Hutcheson says the county has been considering e-cigarettes the same as regular cigarettes. The change was a clarification to the existing policy.

Brunswick County first adopted the no-smoking policy in 1993 and updated it in 2010 to address signage and office space. Monday’s amendment cites exposure to secondhand emissions among the reasons for the change.

More changes may be coming to the county’s smoking policies. Official recently closed a survey on tobacco use in county parks as part of a study on limiting or completely banning smoking in county parks.
