The Richmond Senior High School varsity baseball team stepped out of conference play this week, beating David W. Butler 11-9 Tuesday night.
After a five-run sixth innings gave them an 11-6 lead, the Raiders had to stave off a last-ditch rally from the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh inning. Butler scored three runs, but juniors Jude Howard and Cameron Way were able to get the final outs needed to end the game.
Junior Alston Johnson led the Raiders, tallying three hits in four at-bats and hitting four RBIs. Way, freshman Cameron Seagraves and junior David O’Neal also each picked up an RBI. Junior Matthew Walker and senior Hunter Hancock each hit a double.
Despite only having six hits compared to Richmond’s eight, Butler had several opportunities to score additional runs thanks to 11 walks by the Raiders, but couldn’t capitalize, leaving nine runners on base.
Junior Will Dawkins started on the mound, but pitched just two innings after giving up three earned runs off three hits in the first two innings. Junior Hunter Honeycutt pitched the bulk of the game, giving up two earned runs off two hits, while striking out five in 3.2 innings of work.
The Raiders will complete the series Thursday night at Butler.
