HAMLET — Two women died in a head-on collision on the U.S. 74 bypass early Thursday night.
According to a report made by Trooper M. Lindsey with the N.C. Highway Patrol, 71-year-old Belva Maddox was travelling west in the eastbound lane when she ran into a vehicle driven by 51-year-old Angela Fisher.
Neither woman was from Richmond County or any of the neighboring counties. No other injuries were reported.
Maddox, of Charlotte, and Fisher, of the unincorporated Pender County community of Currie, were both killed in the wreck.
The report shows the crash happened around 7:28 p.m., one-tenth of a mile west of N.C. 177, south of Hamlet.
Information on the vehicles involved in the crash was not available from the N.C. Highway Patrol communications office Friday afternoon.
Communications personnel said the report did not indicate whether or drug or alcohol use was suspected.
The estimated speed of impact was also unavailable in the preliminary report.
Hamlet Rescue also responded to the wreck.
