RALEIGH — Six athletes from Richmond County participated in the 2016 North Carolina Special Olympics Summer Games June 3-5.
Shawn Michael Richardson and John Christopher Roscoe both competed in bowling, with Richardson winning a gold medal and Roscoe winning silver.
The other four — Joshua Dazey, Joy Frye, Kimberly Dawn Grooms and Daniel Skipper — all competed in the athletics/track and field events, which range from the standing long jump to the softball throw to the 50 meter dash.
Dazey took home a gold medal in the standing long jump, a 6th place ribbon in softball throw and 4th place ribbon in the 50 meter dash. Frye came away with a gold medal in the softball throw, silver medal in the standing long jump and 5th place ribbon in the 50 meter dash. Grooms won two silver medals — one for the long jump and 50 meter walk — and a bronze in the softball throw. Skipper racked up three medals at the games — a silver in the 50 meter dash and two bronze medals for the standing long jump and the softball throw.
