RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Participants in an exercise to redraw North Carolina’s congressional boundaries without involving politics hope it will increase interest in taking partisan considerations out of redistricting and help the state avoid extensive litigation on future maps.

Five former state Supreme Court justices and five other judges drew districts for North Carolina’s 13 seats in the U.S. House using demographic and other specific guidelines. They unveiled their results Monday in Raleigh.

The judges didn’t use voter registration or statewide election results in in drawing two draft maps. A final map was completed after more work to ensure compliance with the U.S. Voting Rights Act.

North Carolina state lawmakers currently draw the district boundaries for Congress and the legislature. Maps approved in 2011 have been struck down this year by courts.
