GRAHAM, N.C. (AP) — A man has been sentenced to serve at least 18 years in prison for firing upon an Alamance County sheriff’s deputy and crashing into another deputy’s car in a high-speed chase last year.

The Times-News of Burlington (http://bit.ly/2btwMp3 ) reports that 28-year-old Billy J. Miles was sentenced Thursday after entering an Alford plea to attempted first-degree murder. The plea means he does not admit guilt but acknowledges prosecutors have enough evidence to convict him.

Authorities say Miles sped off from a traffic stop in Haw River in May 2015, prompting a high-speed chase where he later stopped, shot at a deputy and drove off again.

The chase ended when Miles slammed into a different deputy’s car. Miles, his passenger and the deputy were all treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
