MINERAL SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) — Deputies are investigating after they say a teenager suspected of breaking into a Union County home was fatally shot by a man who lives there.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that investigators believe 17-year-old Marquies Waters and at least one other suspect broke into the house in Mineral Springs early Monday, awakening a man inside.
The unidentified man told deputies he yelled and saw the suspects jump out of a window.
A short time later, deputies say the suspects returned to possibly to retrieve items left behind when the man saw Waters on the back porch and fired shots.
No charges had been filed as of Monday.
Waters’ mother told WSOC-TV that she doesn’t believe her son was breaking into the home and said he knew the man who lives there.
