BOSTON (AP) — A former Boston man who was on the lam for more than two decades after he was indicted in Massachusetts on child rape charges has been held on $1 million bail.

John Hartin pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday to five counts of child rape.

Prosecutors say the 46-year-old Hartin molested two boys when they were between the ages of 6 and 9. One was a relative of a romantic partner, and the other was the first child’s friend.

Authorities say Hartin fled after his July 1993 indictment.

He was arrested in Walkertown, North Carolina, in June, where he had been living under the name Jay Matthew Carter.

His lawyer, while not addressing the allegations directly, said his client has not faced accusations in any other jurisdiction.
