WENDELL, N.C. (AP) — It’s unlikely that tobacco farmers in North Carolina would celebrate a crop-destroying pest, yet a Chapel Hill artist plans to pay artistic tribute to it.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports (http://bit.ly/2aNvCmj) the Wendell Board of Commissioners has approved Chapel Hill muralist Mike Brown’s proposal for a 70-foot long mural depicting a tobacco worm sitting on top of a tobacco leaf. It’s hoped the project will be completed before the start of the Wendell Harvest Festival on Oct. 7.
Town officials will nominate the artwork to the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest tobacco worm. Brown will embed a code in the work that visitors can scan with their mobile devices to provide access to a website where they can record personal experiences working in tobacco.
