Gangs have Princeville trying to bring back police force

PRINCEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Officials in Princeville have created a task force to try to bring back a police department to the Edgecombe County town.

Former Mayor Ed Bridgers told the Rocky Mount Telegram reports (http://bit.ly/2b1gdUN ) that gangs are running rampant and Princeville needs a police force that is nearby.

The town currently pays Edgecombe County deputies to patrol after disbanding its police force in 2014.

Edgecombe County commissioners recently approved a $125,000 contract to police the town for a year. That was half what Princeville paid a year ago.

Edgecombe County Manager Eric Evans says the town paid more the year before because it bought vehicles and paid other startup costs. Evans says the town also asked for a financial break.
