New North Carolina heroin task force makes first arrests

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — A new task force formed to stem the flow of heroin into the Wilmington area has made its first arrests.

Local media outlets report that the Coastal Carolina Criminal Enterprise Task Force arrested 11 suspects Wednesday and charged seven others with a variety of heroin or drug-related offenses.

Two of those charged were already in jail while five remain fugitives.

The task force was formed last month by the FBI, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the sheriff’s departments in Brunswick and New Hanover counties. With the task force, investigations don’t have to stop at county or state lines and investigators can follow the supply drug chain.

Authorities say most of the heroin coming into the area is from New York and New Jersey.
