WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting he set a fire that killed two women in an oceanfront condominium complex at a North Carolina beach.
Media outlets report that Marshall Doran pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and first-degree arson in the December 2014 fires at Carolina Beach.
Authorities say Doran set a car on fire underneath the condominiums and the blaze quickly spread.
New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David says firefighters could see 72-year-old Mary Cochran banging on a window screaming for help, but couldn’t get to her in time. Authorities say 43-year-old Darlene Maslar was also killed.
David says Doran also set a fire at another condominium a few blocks away several hours later.
