VOTER ID-NORTH CAROLINA

RALEIGH — Existing television spots to educate voters about North Carolina’s voting requirements are being canceled. One million informational posters and push cards going to community groups and others are outdated and most likely headed for the trash. Binders carefully created as elections bibles for each of the state’s 2,700 precincts now must undergo a heavy edit. The reason is last week’s federal appeals court ruling that struck down North Carolina’s voter photo identification mandate, and other voting rules changes approved more than three years ago. By Gary D. Robertson. SENT: 730 words.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Paul Ryan and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz are about to test voters’ anti-establishment mood, first hand. That includes challenges against Ryan, R-Wis., and Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., who abruptly resigned last week as chair of the Democratic National Committee. By Alan Fram. SENT: 870 words, photos.

SECRETARY OF STATE-ELECTION

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Recent federal court decisions have stalled or killed voter identification laws in Texas, Wisconsin, North Carolina and North Dakota. But in the Secretary of State race in the nation’s most Hispanic state, voter ID remains a hot topic with the GOP nominee saying New Mexico needs a strict voter identification law to battle fraud. Republican candidate Nora Espinoza told The Associated Press this week that none of the recent rulings had changed her mind about voter ID legislation. In fact, she questioned the decision overturning North Carolina’s law and suggested appellate judges overstepped their authority. By Russell Contreras. SENT: 420 words.
