RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper will no longer defend the state’s voter ID law now that a federal appeals court has ruled that it was passed with “discriminatory intent.”

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals blocked enforcement of the law last Friday, and the attorney general’s office confirmed Tuesday that its lawyers won’t keep appealing.

The decision by the office of the Democratic challenger to Republican Gov. Pat McCrory won’t halt appeals, however. The governor and GOP legislative leaders have their own attorneys on the case.

Still, McCrory blasted Cooper for failing to do his job by defending state law.
