ROUGEMONT, N.C. (AP) — Officials say two horses wandering on a highway have died after they were hit by a vehicle in Durham County.

News outlets report that North Carolina State Highway Patrol says the crash happened early Sunday morning on Highway 501 near Rougemont.

State troopers say the horses had gotten loose and were in the roadway. A motorist spotted the animals and stopped along the side of the road.

Officials say another driver, who was paying attention to the stopped car and didn’t see the horses in the road, collided with animals, which both died.

The driver who hit the horses was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say no charges will be filed.

It is not yet known where the horses came from.
