ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Law officers say a motorist is dead after fleeing from officers investigating a reported road rage incident in Asheville.

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday a man sped away from officers and slammed head-on into another vehicle less than a minute later, sending a woman and child to the hospital. Deputies say they were expected to recover, but the driver of the fleeing Toyota Corolla was killed in the Wednesday night crash.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Natalie Bailey says the names of those involved are being withheld until families are notified.

Deputies responded after two calls before 10 p.m. Wednesday reporting a highway road rage incident and a disturbance at a car wash. They found the reported vehicle, but the driver fled the car wash by crashing through a gate arm.
