JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The N.C. Highway Patrol says a motorist is facing multiple charges after the SUV he was driving hit a ditch, went airborne and landed on a car.

Local media outlets report the patrol said the accident occurred on Wednesday between Richlands and Jacksonville.

According to the patrol, 85-year-old Leon Ward Sylvester Jr. of Emerald Isle was driving southbound on N.C. Highway 24 when his SUV landed on top of a car driven by 73-year-old Mattie Andrews, who had stopped at a stop sign.

Sylvester was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he was listed in fair condition. The patrol said he is expected to be released from the hospital soon. Trooper J.D. Kirk said Sylvester has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and reckless driving.
