DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — The American Red Cross is opening a shelter for people forced to evacuate their homes after flooding caused by heavy rains that lashed across central North Carolina.
Red Cross spokeswoman Brittany Jennings says the shelter opened Sunday at Hillside High School in Durham.
Severe storms that rolled through central North Carolina late Saturday brought some of their biggest impact to Wake, Durham, Nash and Edgecombe counties. Raleigh officials had to rescue people from their homes and flooded cars.
One motorcyclist was killed by lightning on Blue Ridge Parkway near Mount Mitchell State Park. The Gaston Gazette reported (http://bit.ly/29Nz8Nl) Scott Pasour of Dallas was pulling on rain gear with two other motorcyclists when the bolt struck.
