WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — A federal, state and local task force has been created to stem the flow of heroin into the Wilmington area.

Local media outlets report that the FBI, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the sheriff’s departments in Brunswick and New Hanover counties are taking part.

Authorities say that most of the heroin in the area is coming from New York and New Jersey.

New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon says the task force means investigations don’t have to stop at county or state lines and investigators can simply follow the supply chain.

Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram says in the past six months more than 1,000 bags of heroin, thousands of dollars and high-powered weapons have been seized in the county.
