FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The attorney for the couple charged with animal cruelty in connection with the shelter they owned in Hoke County says he’s concerned that the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is using footage from a rescue there in a television ad.

Attorney James R. Van Camp tells The Fayetteville Observer (http://bit.ly/29PGLFb) he has “serious concerns” about the ad featuring The Haven Friends for Life animal shelter. The ASPCA removed nearly 700 animals from The Haven in January.

Van Camp represents Stephen and Linden Spear, who are charged with cruelty to animals. Their case is scheduled for trial in September.

The Haven also is featured in two videos that the ASPCA published on social media. An ASPCA spokeswoman says the nonprofit uses footage from cases to raise money.
