MORRISVILLE, N.C. (AP) — An organization representing police officers in North Carolina says former state Sen. Josh Stein’s work experience and legislative record makes him the best choice to succeed Roy Cooper as attorney general.

The North Carolina Police Benevolent Association has endorsed Stein for the job in the November election. The association scheduled a news conference Monday in Morrisville to highlight its choice of the Raleigh Democrat over Republican nominee Buck Newton of Wilson.

Stein is a former senior deputy attorney general who once ran the consumer protection division within Cooper’s office. He served in the Senate from 2009 until March. Newton is still a sitting senator. Cooper is running for governor.

The police association cited Stein’s work fighting payday lenders as well as improving domestic violence protections and impaired driving laws.
