Robbery, shootout unfold near N. Carolina hospital

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Two suspects were arrested after a home-invasion robbery and exchange of gunfire that put a nearby Winston-Salem hospital on temporary lockdown, police said Sunday.

A news release from the Winston-Salem Police Department said officers received a call late Saturday about gunfire at an apartment less than a mile from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Police say three suspects forced their way into the residence, held a man and woman at gunpoint and assaulted them while they stole property.

The suspects tried to drive away but crashed into parked vehicles, disabling their automobile, according to the news release.

At this point, they got out and began shooting guns toward the apartment, and one of the victims returned fire, police said. The suspects then ran toward the hospital.

Foot chases with officers who brought police dogs ensued.

Two suspects were found and taken into custody on hospital property without further incident.

The hospital was put on temporary lockdown during the search.

The two males arrested — ages 17 and 18 — were being held on charges of armed robbery, burglary, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and firing into an occupied dwelling, the release said.

The two victims — a man and a woman — suffered minor lacerations, and the woman was grazed by a suspect’s bullet. She was treated at the scene for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Police said Sunday they were still looking for the third suspect.
