WINDSOR, N.C. (AP) — Authorities are investigating after an inmate died following a fight at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor in eastern North Carolina.
Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Pamela Walker said a release five inmates are thought to have been involved in the Friday night fight broken up by guards.
Two inmates were taken to the hospital and one of them, 24-year-old Joleski Floyd, died about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. He was serving 10-to-13 years for second degree murder in the July 2008 shooting death of a man in Warsaw.
The other injured inmate was treated and released.
There was a second fight Saturday that left a third inmate in stable condition in the hospital.
The prison is on modified lockdown meaning inmates can’t receive visitors, use phones or have outside recreation.
