DUNN, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say two Harnett County teenagers have died after the car in which they were riding ran off a road at 80 mph and smashed into a tree near Erwin.

A report filed by Highway Patrol Trooper B.J. Holder says the accident happened just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The victims were identified as 16-year-old Kirby Preston Wood of Dunn and 18-year-old Kzon Crenshaw of Erwin.

Authorities say Wood was killed on impact while Crenshaw died Wednesday at a Raleigh hospital.

Family members told local media outlets the victims, both students at Triton High School, were best friends.
