Lorene Reaves Johnston, 73 of Wilmington, passed away March 6, 2013. Born in Hamlet, the daughter of Alexander and Lena Reaves on 26 July 1940, Lorene is survived by her husband of 50 years Henry W. Johnston, son Ian A. Johnston and wife Elizabeth (Beth), grandchildren, Ethan, Erin and Elliott, all of Wilmington, and sister, Ouida Goerhing and husband Brown of Lexington, Va.
After graduation from Hamlet High School, Lorene attended RPI of William and Mary and completed a four year program receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in three years by attending U.N.C.-Chapel Hill in the summers. Working as a commercial artist in Raleigh, she met and married her husband, a student at the time. Following a move to Wilmington in 1967, she continued servicing the Cameron Village Association and its many stores with their commercial art needs. Becoming interested in interior design in the 70’s, Lorene studied and received her NCIDQ Certificate and became a Professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers. As Lorene R. Johnston, Interior Designer ASID, she completed numerous residential and commercial projects over the years in North Carolina and commercial projects in six states.
Lorene’s lifelong passions were the graphic arts, reading, her cats, collecting quilts, boating and travel.
The family gives special thanks to the Alzheimer’s Association for its family caregiver seminars, her many loving home care givers, the Liberty Commons dedicated staff in the last two years and the gentle care of Lower Cape Fear Hospice in the final months of her struggle.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Andrews Market Street Chapel.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and or the Alzheimer’s Association.
