Dorothy Cabaniss “Cab” Allen passed away July 29, 2010 at the age of 89 at Hospice Haven of Richmond County. She had lived in Rockingham since 1946. She was born Oct. 9, 1920 in Shelby, the daughter of Charlie and Marie Mintz Cabaniss. She graduated from Lattimore High School in 1938, and received her RN from the Shelby Hospital School of Nursing in October 1941. She began work at Charlotte Memorial Hospital Dec. 7, 1941. She joined the Army Nurse Corps in November 1942, and was stationed in Chabua, Assam, India for two and a half years at the 111th General Hospital which was changed to the 234th General Hospital. This was a 1,000 bed hospital that treated illnesses of the Allied troops. She was discharged as a first lieutenant.

She began work at the Richmond County Health Department in 1946 and retired in April of 1981, having taken time off when her children were born. After retirement she volunteered with the Red Cross Bloodmobile, worked to fill in at the White-Ross Clinic and helped her husband in his business, Allen’s Produce Co.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Henry Thomas “Tommy” Allen, Jr., on May 24, 1997, her parents, and her sister Nell Cabaniss Thrower on Feb. 14, 1985.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Elliott of the home, and “Mrs. Ed” Jane Davenport of Gainesville, Ga.; three grandchildren, Stephen Elliott of Mebane, Allen Walker of Gainesville, Ga., and Rachel Walker of Dawsonville, Ga.; two step grandchildren Rianne Davenport of Gainesville, Ga., and Corporal Cole Davenport of Camp Lejeune; and a brother J. Charles Cabaniss of Shelby, NC

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Rockingham on Saturday July 31, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Jim Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Richmond County Memorial Park with military honors. Visitation will be held at Watson-King Funeral Home on Friday, July 30, from 6-8 p.m.
