Clemmons, Saunders take early leads

James Clemmons jumped out to an early lead in the Democratic race for Richmond County Sheriff and Reece Saunders held the edge over incumbent Michael Parker as the first ballots of the 2010 election were released Tuesday night.

Clemmons garnered 1,586 votes, or 46.7 percent among those who either voted as an absentee or took advantage of other early voting options. H.F. “Bo” Frye had 18 percent followed by Wendall Sessoms with 17.9 percent. Former Rockingham Police Chief Eddie Martin had 17.4 percent.

On the Republican ticket, Doug Brown had 221 votes, or 66.8 percent and Georgia Cagle had 33.2 percent.

In the D.A. race, Saunders had 1,993 votes, or almost 61 percent and Parker had 38 percent.
