Inez Gibson Barrett (Maw Maw), was born on July 9, 1931 in Rockingham, N.C.

Inez went to be with her Lord on March 12, 2010 after a long and hard fought battle with lung cancer. She went to her Lord very gracefully at her home. God allowed her the extra time so she could see her granddaughter get married and have a great Christmas season with her family. Each moment was precious and will be remembered by her family.

Inez was preceded in death by her husband Bert S. Barrett and her parents, W.R. Gibson and Vida Mae Gibson of Rockingham.

Inez is survived by her son, Bill Barrett and his wife Laura of Mint Hill; grandchildren Blake Barrett and his wife Jana of Indian Trail and Ashley Brookshire and her husband Grayson of Concord.

She is also survived by her two sisters in Rockingham; Mary Jane Ussery and her husband Thad and Betty McLean and her husband Gene. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews across several states.

Inez’s career began in 1952 when she graduated from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and retired after 35 years. She worked at the Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital as the Nurse Manager of the recovery room for most of her career. She worked in the same position as the hospital was sold to Humana and then later to Novant Presbyterian Hospital.

Inez will be remembered for her kindness to her former patients, friends and her family. She was an outstanding nurse, wife, mother, aunt and grandmother who always put others first. Her mind was always “sharp as a tack” and she could always remember the month and year of any special event. She was full of energy and laughter and just loved life itself.

She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Charlotte. Rev. John Harrill will perform her celebration in going home to see Jesus.

Thanks goes to Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte and their entire staff for their efforts in making Inez as comfortable as possible along the journey to her new home in heaven.

Special thanks go to her niece, Rhonda Belkoski of Augusta, Ga. for her dedication and excellent nursing skills during her time of need. Special thanks also go to her two sisters and their entire family for helping the family during this time of need. Thanks as well to our close friends who have supported us.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday the 13th at McEwen Funeral Home in Mint Hill.

The funeral will be Sunday the 14th at 3 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist in Charlotte, followed by graveside services at Sunset Gardens in Mint Hill.
