Richmond County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested a Hamlet man for the alleged murder of Corey Jasper on Saturday.

Jasper, 36, of Dobbins Heights, was found dead in his home.

Jimmy Jerome Tatum, 28, Winona Street, Hamlet, was charged with felony murder and felony discharging weapon into occupied property.

According to reports, the Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about possible gunshots at a residence on Lavoria Lane in Hamlet.

Deputies arrived on the scene to find Jasper dead in the living room of the home. His body was transported to Sandhills Regional Medical Center and then to the medical examiner, reports said.

Arrest warrants also note that at the time of the shooting three others, besides Jasper, were occupying the home on Lavoria Lane.

Chief Deputy Phil Sweatt with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said that Jasper was shot at least twice. Reports said the weapon was a semi-automatic rifle.

Prior to the shooting, Sweatt said that both men were at a night club in Richmond County when an altercation between the two escalated. Both Tatum and Jasper were listed as unemployed.

Shawn Antonio Tatum, 27, Winona Street, Hamlet, was also arrested by the Sheriff’s Office Saturday for felony possession with intent to sell and distribute cocaine and felony possession with intent to sell and distribute marijuana.

According to reports, Shawn Tatum is the brother of Jimmy Tatum and lives at the same address.

His bond was set at $25,000 and is in the Richmond County Jail a waiting trial.

Jimmy Tatum is currently detained at the Richmond County Jail and no bond has been set.

I am very saddened to hear about Corey...my heart and prayers go out to his entire family, especially Jayla...no one deserves what happened to him....no one has the right to take someone else's life...God Bless you all....also, about the "unemployed" comment, you are ABSOLUTELY right..what does it matter.....Amanda White

this is a very sad situation and i grew up with all three of the young men that are featured in this story. But for the life of me i can't understand what is the need to print that the deceased was unemployed! I really feel like that was not called for at all because what did the fact that he did not have a job have anything to do with him getting murdered? i mean really why print something like that? i mean if you going to print the fact that he was unemployed then why not print that he was a really nice guy that made an impact on a lot of young people in Richmond county!!! this kinda goes back to if you can't say anything nice then dont say anything at all!!!!!

i feel like their was enough negative in this situation.
