It was the same old story for the Richmond Senior men’s soccer team against Southeastern Conference nemesis Pinecrest Monday night.

The Patriots scored four second-half goals as Gray Anderson and Jack Talton both had two goals apiece as Pinecrest blanked Richmond 6-0 at Raider Stadium to finish the season sweep.

“Our boys played hard and we had good opportunities, but we couldn’t convert on them,” Raiders coach Bennie Howard said. “But I preach the same thing every year, which is Pinecrest guys play all year and our guys play only play three months out of the year. Until the people around here realize we’ve got to play all year, then we will never beat Pinecrest.”

The victory improved Pinecrest’s record to 10-4-1 overall, 7-1 in the conference, while the Raiders dropped to 9-8-1, 1-5-1 in the SEC. The Patriots will be the top seed for next week’s conference tournament.

According to Raiders coach Bennie Howard, Richmond will likely be the fifth seed and play at Lumberton in the first round.

Pinecrest led 2-0 at halftime. Allan Yongo blasted a kick from 10-yards out beyond the reach of Raiders’ goalie Evan Frye in the 18th-minute mark to give the Patriots the 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Max Brenner scored a goal from 3-yards out, giving Pinecrest a two-goal advantage it would carry into the break.

The Patriots continued their strong play in the second half as Anderson scored the next two goals to increase Pinecrest’s advantage to 4-0. Anderson scored from 10-yards out, giving Pinecrest a 3-0 lead in the 56th minute. Anderson later split two Richmond’s defenders and fired a kick past the diving Frye in the 73rd minute.

Talton tacked on the final two goals, coming a minute apart. Talton scored from 10-yards out, giving the Patriots a 5-0 advantage in the 75th minute and capped Pinecrest scoring with a goal in the 76th minute.

“We changed some tactical things from the first time we played them, and we’ve made adjustments the second time around in the conference,” Patriots coach Todd Abbey said. “When we scored those first two goals that helped us take controlled of the game from there.”

The Raiders return to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Scotland on Senior Night.
