Applications are now being accepted for the 2009 Richmond County Sheriff’s Citizen Academy.

For an application, contact Capt. Robbie Taylor at the sheriff’s office at 895-3232 or come by the office at 114 East Franklin Street, the Richmond County Courthouse.

The 5th annual academy will be held from Sept. 8 to Oct. 27 on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The purpose of the academy is to help educate citizens about all the tasks for which the sheriff’s office and the judicial system are responsible.

Enrollment is limited to no more than 25 participants.

Pictures of previous academy activities can be view at ww.richmondcountysheriff.net.

Presentations to be made during the academy include those by members of the district attorney’s office, magistrates, judges, special response team members, criminal investigators, K-9 division, civil division and drug unit.

While instruction is given at the courthouse, academy activities also take place elsewhere for demonstrations.

Applicants are asked to undergo a background investigation before acceptance.

The program ends with participants going on ride-alongs with deputies on a normal patrol.
