Pinecrest knocks off Richmond in tennis
ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior boys tennis team put itself behind the eight-ball when it lost four singles matches before heading into doubles play.
Pinecrest took advantage and rolled to a 6-3 match victory over Richmond Tuesday afternoon.
“We really had a chance today to defeat Pinecrest,” Richmond coach Paula York said. “We can’t win only two singles matches and put all the pressure on our doubles.”
Richmond’s Andrew Balzer defeated Don Campbell at No. 2, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 8-6 and Logan Deese edged Luke Athens 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the sixth singles contest. In doubles, Colt Auman and John Pittman teamed to defeat Zack Smith and Marc Shaefer 8-5 to earn the Raiders’ lone point.
The Raiders will return to the courts 4 p.m. Thursday when rival Scotland comes to town.
