With a few more days left to go before its campaign ends, The United Way of Richmond County has surpassed the $250,000 goal for the 2012-2013 campaign year by raising about $256,000.

“It just really seemed like the businesses and folks that normally give, were giving more than they have in the past,” said Michelle Parrish, executive director of the United Way of Richmond County.

She said this is the first time in a couple of years that they have reached their set goal.

The start of the campaign year was March 16, 2012, but the campaign officially kicked-off in September 2012, with United Way’s annual Day of Caring. The current campaign runs through March 15, 2013, according to Parrish.

The thermometers, which are located at Rockingham City Hall, Family Pharmacy on U.S. 1 North and at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital, all show the same amount of money.

Parrish said that surpassing the goal, “feels really good.”

The funds raised go to support United Way charities.

These charities are Sandhills Children Center, Cordova School, Richmond County 4-H Clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Leak Street Alumni, Back Pack Pals, Richmond Co. Aging Services, Samaritan Colony, Richmond County Literacy Council, Richmond Christian Counseling, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, New Horizons Life & Family Services, Salvation Army, Rockingham Rescue Squad, and Our Daily Bread.

Last year, in the 2011-2012 campaign, United Way investments helped 9,950 individuals and more than 76,000 were served.

Adding the funds to help United Way surpass the goal was CSX Transportation-Hamlet which donated $5,000 to the campaign.

Parrish said the money raised was a team effort. “It was an effort of the partners and agencies, the board of directors and the community. I couldn’t have done it without their help,” she said.

If you would like more information on how your company can participate with the United Way Campaign or if you would like to make an individual donation, contact Parrish at 910-997-2173 or 910-206-2909. United Way’s mailing address is PO Box 153, Rockingham, NC 28380.
