The deadline to request a grant from the Rockingham Rotary Club is quickly approaching.

This year’s applications must be received by Friday, March 29. Grants will be awarded before June 1.

Last year, Rotary gave out more than $55,000 to local organizations and businesses and it had more than 80 grant requests from organizations.

Rotary helps many local organizations including the Richmond County Health Department, Our Daily Bread, the Rockingham Fire Department, the Red Cross and the Boy Scouts. According David Wood, president-elect of the Rockingham Rotary Club, they also give out scholarships.

One Richmond County high school senior receives a $1,500 renewable scholarship to attend the four year college or university of their choice. Two seniors receive a $1,000 renewable scholarship to attend Richmond Community College for two years. Two RCC G.E.D. graduates receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend RCC.

Wood said that the club begins the process by sending an application to every organization that requested money the year before. It then sends out applications to every new organization that has sent in a request.

The money given out is raised through the annual Rockingham Rotary Club Auction and Barbecue that is held every November.

Wood said the money helps the organizations and, “for some, it’s the whole budget for the year.”

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders that provide humanitarian service and encourage high ethical standards.
