Elementary schools throughout Richmond County are gearing up to welcome children to the school system during the 2013-14 Kindergarten Registration and Pre-Kindergarten Application periods. Sessions will be held at each school beginning March 1, 2013. Registrations for both programs will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Parents are encouraged to start preparing now for the registration process.

The earlier deadline is because of the state’s switch from the NC WISE information system to the PowerSchool system. All students must be registered early in order for their information to be included in the upload into the new data system.

Information for parents enrolling students in Kindergarten:

All children who will be five years old on or before August 31, 2013 are eligible for kindergarten enrollment for the 2013-14 school year.

2013-14 Kindergarten Registration Schedule:

Schools will be registering students from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. each day.

Friday March 1 LJ Bell Elementary

Thursday, March 7 East Rockingham Elementary for Kindergarten. Cordova School for Pre-K applications only

Friday, March 8 Fairview Heights Elementary

Thursday, March 14 Monroe Avenue Elementary

Friday, March 15 West Rockingham Elementary

Thursday, March 21 Washington Street Elementary

Wednesday, March 27 Mineral Springs Elementary

To register a student for kindergarten, parents must bring the following:

• The Child: Registration cannot be completed unless the child accompanies the parent or guardian. The child must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. It’s very important that the child comes to meet the teachers and tour the school.

• Certified Birth Certificate: Birth Certificates can be secured from the Office of the Register of Deeds in the Richmond County Courthouse. For children born in other counties or states, a birth certificate can be obtained by writing the Register of Deeds office in the county where the child was born. Hospital copies of birth certificates are not acceptable.

• Immunization Record: Immunizations are available by appointment at the Richmond County Health Department from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Fridays. The health department’s mobile unit will also be at each registration site to provide immunizations to those children still needing them. Please be sure to bring your medicaid or health insurance card with you. After 30 days, students who do not have all of their immunization requirements, will be suspended from school.

• North Carolina Health Assessment: According to North Carolina law, every child entering kindergarten in the public schools must receive a health assessment. The health assessment must be made no more than 12 months prior to the date of school entry. No child may attend kindergarten unless a health assessment transmittal form, indicating that the child has received the health assessment, is presented to the school principal. The parent, guardian, or responsible person has 30 calendar days from the first day of attendance to present the required health assessment form for the child. After the 30 days, those students who do not have a health assessment will be suspended from schools.

• Proof of Residency: Two different examples needed: Examples include a recent utility bill (including electric, gas, water, sewer, and cable), rent receipt or property tax receipt.

Information for parents seeking to enter children in the Pre-Kindergarten Program:

To be eligible for Richmond County Schools Pre-Kindergarten program, the child must turn four years of age on or before August 31, 2013. Pre-Kindergarten applications will be accepted at each elementary school except for at East Rockingham Elementary. Applications will instead be taken at the Cordova School. Children will be screened during the registration process. Parents must complete an application process at the registration site, but the application does NOT guarantee that the child will be enrolled in the Pre-K Program, because the program is not necessarily first-come first serve.

Pre-Kindergarten Application Schedule:

Friday, March 1 LJ Bell Elementary

Thursday, March 7 Cordova School (Pre-K application only)

Friday, March 8 Fairview Heights Elementary

Thursday, March 14 Monroe Avenue Elementary

Friday, March 15 West Rockingham Elementary

Immunizations are available at the Richmond County Health Department by appointment, between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Fridays. The Health Department will also provide immunizations on site for children who will still need them at that time. Families should carry insurance or Medicaid cards with them when seeking immunizations.
