Do you wish you knew how to use the camera you got for Christmas? Perhaps with a bit of guidance, you could capture images that would wow your friends and family.
Often, people reach out to and ask for help from professionals like Rockingham’s Jimmy McDonald.
“I receive many photography questions via email and when out and about,” wrote McDonald on his photography blog, where he announced a series of classes he will teach. “I enjoy meeting other camera enthusiasts and sharing what I have learned as a professional photographer. During the classes, I will explain in detail various settings, techniques and tricks that I use during photo sessions and assignments. The classes are informal and questions are encouraged.”
McDonald will teach seven classes over the next two months, ranging in topics from camera settings to low light photography.
The first class will be held today, and will focus on introducing you to your camera. Classes will begin at 6 p.m. Each class is about one to two hours long depending on the class size.
The next class will be held Feb. 12, and will be about composition and shooting for web display, e-sharing and printing.
The class following that, to be held on Feb. 19, will be about three main camera settings. The next class on Feb. 26 will cover lighting technique from flash to ambient lighting. On March 12, McDonald’s class is scheduled to cover action photography such as sporting events, children and wildlife. On March 19, the class will learn about landscape photography and on March 26 the class will cover night time and low light photography.
“Several people suggested that I arrange to teach a local photography class,” said McDonald. “The idea had been pitched to Arts Richmond in the past and their facilities are in a great location.
The Arts Richmond Building is located at 123 E. Washington St. in Rockingham.
“These classes are separate from the monthly photo group meetings also hosted by Arts Richmond,” explained McDonald. “After attending a few meetings with the Richmond County Photography Group, I saw an opportunity to cover specific topics that needed a classroom type setting. I offered a series of classes last spring and we had a great group of people attend. I am happy to begin a second series of classes beginning this month.”
Sign up is not required. Anyone interested is invited to attend any classes of their choice. Cost is $20 per class. Fees will be due upon arrival for each class.
Be prepared for your class by bringing your camera with the camera battery charged, and the camera instruction manual. Have pen and paper handy, and prepare your questions. Select photographs that you have questions about, and bring some of your “greatest hits.”
