The play “Dial ‘M’ for Murder” opens at the Richmond Community Theatre on Thursday and tickets are running out quickly.
“By the second day we’ve already sold close to 200 tickets,” said Theatre Director Shelly Walker. “We have 146 seats, and for opening night we already have 67 people coming.”
Walker said a large, diverse cast and a familiar play title are driving up the excitement for the show.
“People know this title and a large cast brings a big variety of people to the shows,” said Walker.
Walt Wood, one of the actors in the show, said this play’s cast comes from all walks of life and includes teachers, a magistrate, a speech pathologist and other professions.
According to Wanda Bullard, the reception following the first show will be quite a celebration, with a murder theme.
“It’s going to be fun and it will reflect the suspense of the show,” said Bullard. “The food will be smothered in sauces, chocolate money will be the motive, and there will be death by chocolate. We will serve virgin bloody Marie’s, and those who don’t want them will be drowned in water.”
Actors fresh off the stage will be “bursting with energy” said Walker, and members of the audience will have a chance to mingle with them as they get refreshments.
The reception may spill out onto the sidewalk, weather permitting, as it has in past years, according to Bullard.
Preparations for the play have been fun but exhausting, said Walker.
“It’s a very complicated play,” said Walker, who is excited to open on Thursday.
