A new cardiologist and an established cardiologist unite in the Richmond/Scotland County community for the FirstHealth of the Carolinas cardiology service.

Board certified cardiologists, David Shin and ‘Jide G. Lawal, are now FirstHealth affiliates associated with FirstHealth Cardiology Services-Rockingham and FirstHealth Cardiology Services-Laurinburg.

“We are pleased to have two such high-quality providers join the FirstHealth family,” said John Krahnert, M.D., chief medical officer for FirstHealth of the Carolinas.

Shin earned a B.A. in chemistry from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., and a medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, La. He did his internship and residency in internal medicine at Tulane, where he also completed a fellowship in cardiology.

He specializes in invasive noninterventional cardiology, which includes heart catheterizations, pacemaker implantations, transesophageal echocardiograms, and the interpretation of transthoracic echocardiograms, stress nuclear tests, stress echocardiograms and ECGs.

Shin recently relocated from Jacksonville, Fla., and he said he was drawn to FirstHealth of the Carolinas because of its reputation as a progressive organization noted for its efficient delivery of quality health care. He was especially happy to learn that the president, Dan R. Barnes, of the FirstHealth Physician Group is a physician with a firsthand understanding of the challenges of medical practice.

Shin is certified in cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine and also has certifications in CT angiography and nuclear cardiology.

Shin said his prior position included hospital privileges in eight hospitals with daily responsibilities in each hospital.

“The FirstHealth opportunity allows me to care for patients in my clinic and focus on the practice of my invasive skills instead of rounding in hospitals and covering multiple clinics. This location is also closer to my parents and, hopefully, will allow me more time with my family,” Shin said.

Lawal earned his medical degree from the College of Medicine at the University of Lagos in Lagos, Nigeria, and completed his internship, residency and a fellowship in cardiology at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons at Harlem Hospital Center, New York, N.Y.

Lawal served Rockingham and Laurinburg in his private practice, Sandhills Cardiology, before joining FirstHealth.

He specializes in noninvasive cardiology, including echocardiograms, nuclear and Holter studies and invasive, noninterventional cardiology, including cardiac catheterizations and coronary angiograms, pacemaker implantations and TEE.

Lawal is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and nuclear cardiology and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

He said he has had a wonderful working relationship with FirstHealth over the past 12 years.

“I am particularly pleased with the quality of care provided to my patients in both Richmond and Scotland counties over that period and with my positive relationship with the other medical professionals in the community, especially Dr. Matthew Block, the area’s only other cardiologist. I am delighted to form this association with FirstHealth in the continued pursuit of excellent cardiovascular care to our community,” Lawal said.

Krahnert said there is a need for cardiology care in Richmond and Scotland county. ” … Dr. Lawal now has an outstanding partner to help meet those needs. Now patients in the area also have extensive local access to FirstHealth’s cardiology services along with the support of the state-of-the-art programs that are available at Reid Heart Center just up the road,” he said.
