Rock bands from Rockingham are growing in the greater region.

Hydrenaline, a band that normally only plays in Rockingham, played at Leather Pockets in Southern Pines on Saturday and band manager and bass player Ray Hildreth said they are hoping to expand to Fayetteville soon, too.

“We want to stay reasonably close to Rockingham, within an hour,” said Hildreth, who remains loyal to his home-based fans.

Meanwhile, The First to Fall, a band Hydrenaline shared the Leather Pockets’ stage with, is heading to Greensboro for a Battle of the Bands on Feb. 9. They are seeking support from their fans, and hoping they will help organize a carpool, according to band manager Kevin Johnson.

The crowd gathered in tightly around the The First To Fall from the beginning of their set until the end, and was not shy about headbanging and moshing.

“They get the crowd going pretty good,” said Johnson. “We had a good time. The crowd size was pretty good.”

Johnson said the Greensboro show will be held at the Green Street Club at 113 N. Green St. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by messaging the band on their Facebook page, by emailing them at thefirsttofall@ymail.com or by calling Johnson at 910-461-7601. Ticket numbers are limited so don’t waste time, he advised. The show is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

“The Battle of the Bands will be in American Idol format and the band will be judged in front of Sumerian Records,” said Johnson. “If they win, they go on a summer tour and if they progress to the next level they get a record contract.”

The First To Fall will play in Fayetteville on Saturday, at the Drunk Horse Pub.

According to Johnson, The First to Fall recorded a single this past weekend which is scheduled for release “in the next week or two.”

“We will put it in the cloud and we will have a few CDs to hand out as promos,” said Johnson.

Johnson said the Leather Pockets show was practice for the Greensboro event.

“We were pleased with it,” he said. “And at the end of March we are going to a professional recording studio in Fayetteville.”

Hydrenaline and The First To Fall are separate acts but work closely together, and share band members.

“We’re all pretty tight,” said Johnson.

And Hildreth plays in bands with both of his sons. His older son is his drummer, and the younger son plays in The First To Fall. Hildreth said the boys grew up in a “rockin’” household.

“When my boys were growing up I was always playing in bands and I pretty much gave them the option and said if they wanted to play I’d support them 100 percent,” said Hildreth. “I love playing music with my sons, it’s the best thing in the world. They took it and ran with it. They have a mosh pit pretty much every show.”

Hydrenaline’s next Hudson Brothers’ show will be Feb. 1 at 8:30 p.m.
