Greyhound Lines Inc. has taken over the bus route between Charlotte and Fayetteville, the state Department of Transportation announced recently.
The intercity route was previously operated by Coach America/Horizon Coach Lines.
The route, which began operation in October 2010, serves Fayetteville, Laurinburg, Rockingham, Wadesboro, Monroe and Charlotte.
It offers one round-trip run daily and connects with the Charlotte Area Transit System and Fayetteville Area System of Transit, as well as other Greyhound intercity bus routes.
The Rockingham bus stop is located at Central Taxi at 408 E. Broad Ave. Although it is not a Greyhound bus station, the Greyhound bus stops at the Central Taxi location.
Tickets can be purchased online at Greyhound.com, at the Fayetteville bus stop, at the Laurinburg bus stop, at the Monroe bus stop or at the Charlotte bus stop.
Tickets can also be purchased directly from the driver but exact change is required.
Angie Wiggins, assistant manager of Central Taxi, said that business at the Greyhound bus stop is “picking up more and more.”
Central Taxi is open 24 hours a day.
The bus from Fayetteville to Charlotte is scheduled to arrive at 12:30 a.m. The bus returning from Charlotte to Fayetteville pulls in at about 6:30 p.m.
The 238-mile ride between Charlotte and Fayetteville takes 3 hours and 30 minutes.
The 65-mile ride between Rockingham and Fayetteville takes about one hour and 35 minutes. The 74-mile drive between Rockingham and Charlotte will take approximately one hour and 55 minutes.
One-way tickets can run as little as $8 for seniors to $22 for refundable tickets.
The state Board of Transportation at its November meeting in Raleigh approved $217,144 to Greyhound Lines Inc. for the continuation of this service. The funding approved enables the route to continue operation from Jan. 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014. These state funds match $217,144 in federal funds, totaling $434,288.
“Intercity bus services are fixed-route, scheduled services that provide long-distance transportation between North Carolina cities, as well as connections to the national intercity bus system,” said Jennifer Garifo, a spokesman for the state DOT.
The DOT Public Transportation Division awards grant funds to local public transportation systems. These grants enable systems to provide people in all 100 counties access to education, job opportunities and health care.
