Molasses Creek will perform Sunday, Jan. 13, for The Rooster’s Wife at Poplar Knight Spot at 6:45 p.m. This lively folk group is on the road for a brief winter tour and will be in the Aberdeen area for one night only.

Poplar Knight Spot is at 114 Knight St. in Aberdeen.

A talented band of musicians, Molasses Creek’s high-energy performances and quirky sense of humor make for an entertaining and family-friendly night out. Their music is a mix of contemporary folk with a hearty helping of Americana.

Molasses Creek’s music brings the listener back to a simpler time of picking tunes, sharing songs, stories and laughter on the porch with friends. With strong vocals, elegant harmonies (and some truly wicked fiddling), its no wonder this band took a top award on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.”

Molasses Creek’s inspiration arose amidst exotic fig trees and rich tidewater marshes of isolated Ocracoke Island, N.C. Only accessible by ferry, Ocracoke is an enchanting step out of modern times into a world of captivating natural beauty, rich maritime history, ghostly shipwrecks, heroic lifesavers, crafty pirates, and a community of 900 independently minded residents.

Molasses Creek has recorded 12 albums over the past 19 years. In April of 2012, Molasses Creek’s newest release, “An Island Out of Time,” reached the #4 spot on the National Folk Radio DJ Charts.

Molasses Creek’s roster includes Gary Mitchell (guitar/vocals), Fiddler Dave Tweedie (fiddle/vocals), Lou Castro (dobro/bass/vocals), Marcy Brenner (mandolin/banjolin/bass/vocals), and Gerald Hampton (mandolin/upright bass).
