Dear Editor,

Thank you, Dawn M. Kurry, for the interesting article in the Richmond County Daily Journal Weekender Dec. 22-23, 2012 under the headline — “NRA says arm teachers to protect students.”

In my opinion, two items stood out. First, a more appropriate headline would read, “Unarmed teachers killed trying to protect students.”

The second was the irrational rant provided by billionaire New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, lambasting the NRA proposal to use trained, armed, security to protect students and teachers wherever local school districts thought appropriate. Had the Mayor not been surrounded by his staff of fully armed and trained personal bodyguards, in addition to a wall of police protection from New York’s Finest, his remarks might seem to come from a position of thoughtful wisdom and less from political correctness.

Respectfully,

Leeman E. Ormsby

Wow! So many mixed emotions. If we need metal detectors in grammar school we as a nation have failed miserably. Yes God is the answer. Along with discipline of our youth. What's the problem? Generation to generation be politically correct! Aka don't be honest! Then tell people lying is no good! Sorry for gramatical issues I'm on this much needed technology....... c'mon people let's get real you can't shake a peach tree and get steak......as Dr. Phil says lol.........past behavior is the best predictor of future acts. I own a gun and been told I'm crazier than a 4 eyed spider monkey but I don't shoot people even those that have offered me money to off someone.......lol hehe my 3 boys drive me bonkers ages 13 6. and 7 I'm not killing them ourpastgenerations already have.....good old days my butt spineless sellouts. You respect your elders where I come from.......guess the elders let it slide......if I was told to hop on one foot and scrub the floor I didit.........33 years old and that's what was instilled in me.......love my parents......and I got my butt whooped.......I didn't breed violence I learned respect......a word no longer valued

You know that in every one of these cases where these nuts go into kill mode, there have been ample warnings and Red flags that were ignored or some how not taken seriosly, in the case where the Army Doctor shot all thase soldiers there were warnings documented in his records for several years, and the kid that went nuts in Columbine had written essays or story line work talking about mass murder and this kid in the lastest one was, even visually obviously deranged, probably due in part to his parents seperation.

We, all of us, better start paying closer attention when we suspect that something is not right and contact the authorities.

Mental health people have also taken nuts too lightly or not serious, if you hear a threat of any type against anyone call sheriff Clemmons, he takes it serious.

This job is for the whole community not just for over-burdened law enforcement officers, you don`t mind calling them when you lock your keys in your car and they come promptly, don`t you think they would do the same to protect all of us, especially our children.

No disrespect intended but allowing prayer is schools will not protect our children. I am befuddled why schools do not have metal detectors, armed security, allow backpacks, and access doors remain unsecured. It seems that people still shroud themselves in the belief that "it won't happen to me....or here" and then the affected community is outraged and devastated. Solutions should be implemented....arming teachers isn't one of them.

telltales, you should really stop watching MSNBC and reading DailyKos. Why does David Gregory (NBC NEWS) send his kids to school where there are 11 armed guards on campus? Why should we send our kids to unsafe schools while the elite get to send theirs to safe learning environments?

Mr. Ormsby, If guns will protect students in a claasroom, then how do you explain the Columbine shootings where an armed security officer was on duty. How did the Va. Tech slaughter of 32 happen when the Va. Tech campus has its own police force on duty 24/7?

telltales, there you go again spouting off about something you know little about. The armed guard at Columbine was ordered to stay out of the building. Look at the Portland, Oregon shooter, why did he finally stop his murdering rampage? A man with a conceal carry permit and weapon!!!!!

Kevin1, Enough of the fairy tale. Deputy Neil Gardner a 15 year veteran of the Jefferson County, Colo. police. Gardner fired on Eric Harris with four (4) rounds but failed to halt his killing spree. The second officer on the scene was Paul Smoker a patrolman who also fired on Harris but he too failed to stop him. Now the NRA and its dumb promoters think a armed teacher will do the job. GET REAL

Mr. O,

You have hit the preverbial nail on the head, there are qualifed teachers that could be armed and protective in situations that require anti violemce reaction that might stop someone intent on harming our children and these liberal wimps need to withdraw into their nests.

thank you for saying what 90% of us parents and grand parents feel.
