Many people came to the Richmond County Judicial Center in Rockingham to support Vickie Daniel being sworn in as the new Clerk of Superior Court for Richmond County.
Daniel, who was sworn in on Wednesday, was appointed by the former Clerk of Superior Court, Kathy Gainey, who is retiring. The Clerk of Superior Court is an elected position, with four-year terms.
Daniel will finish out the rest of Gainey’s term and will have to campaign and run for the position in 2014. Daniel said that Kathy Gainey, “did an excellent job as the Clerk of Court. I have big shoes to fill.”
Born and raised in Rockingham, Daniel graduated from Richmond Senior High School in 1975. She has been in the Richmond County Court system for 30 years and started as a Deputy Clerk Jan. 9, 1984. Daniel said she was hired by Miriam Greene, the Clerk of Court in 1984.
She has been married to attorney John Daniel for 26 years. “I adore him,” she said.
Daniel was sworn in by Judge Tanya Wallace, the Senior Resident Superior Court Judge for Judicial District 20A. Daniel then swore in her staff of 18 women who will act as her assistants and deputies. The women sworn in are Beth Pettitt, Ronda Webb, Susann Honeycutt, Annette McNeill, Shannon McIntyere, Sarah Robinson, Yvette Potts, Sarah Sessoms, Stacey Sweatt, Crystal Hunsucker, Kim Blake, Virginia Gibbon, Linda Byrd, Victoria Burns, Meredith Freeman, Charity Mack, Wanda Clark and Joy Gilchrist.
The people watching and supporting Daniel included Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen, Richmond County Sheriff James Clemmons Jr., Richmond County D.A. Reece Saunders and his staff, the Anson County Clerk of Superior Court Mark Hammond, Scott Brewer, the Chief District Court Judge for Judicial District 20A, and representatives from North Carolina State Highway Patrol and representatives from both Hamlet and Rockingham police departments. Daniel’s husband, John, and son, Adam Williams, as well as friends from Anson and Stanley County also came to watch the event.
Brewer, who has known Daniel for 27 years, said he thinks she will “do an excellent job.”
“I feel very blessed and humbled,” Daniel said.
