Local author Rona Leach McLeod will be at Hamlet Memorial Library on Jan. 26, from 1o a.m. to 12 p.m., for a book signing to promote her three books.
Born in Laurinburg, McLeod was raised in Maxton. After graduating from R.B. Dean High School in Maxton, McLeod attended St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, where she received her bachelor’s degree in biology. She said her goal was to become a medical doctor. When asked how she got into the education field, she said that after graduating from St. Andrews, she took a job teaching health and science at a middle school. As a teacher, she said she found her calling.
She attended the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C., where she received two master’s degrees, one in biology and one in education administration. She then received her doctorate in educational leadership from Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
She currently works at St. Andrews where she is an assistant visiting professor of education, where she teaches education majors.
McLeod began writing books in 1996 and the books she will be promoting are, “Character Education - The Birth of Hope Through Unconditional Love for Total Fulfillment,” “Diversity Awareness for K-6 Teachers: The Impact on Student Learning,” and “Big Daddy Chinaberry: Love Given - Love Returned.”
“Character Education - The Birth of Hope Through Unconditional Love for Total Fulfillment” was written by McLeod and Virgie Binford and is a book tailored towards family and teaches parents how to reinforce positive character traits in children such as respect and responsibility.
“Diversity Awareness for K-6 Teachers: The Impact on Student Learning” is a resource guide for elementary teachers and student teachers used to teach diversity awareness in the classroom across a wide variety of class subjects. She wants children to “better understand each other,” she said.
“Big Daddy Chinaberry: Love Given - Love Returned” is a children’s book that was written by McLeod and illustrated by her husband, Herbert McLeod, that teaches children how to cope with death and loss.
McLeod said she will be available to talk with people at the book signing about a wide range of interests. All of her books will be available to purchase at the signing. She will also sign any books that have been previously purchased.
