A tornado watch has been issued by the National Weather Service of Raleigh for Scotland County that will last until 5 p.m.
Severe thunderstorms, either from a continuing squall line or new development, will remain a threat ahead of the surging cold front from southern Virginia and the Carolinas to eastern Georgia and northern and central Florida. Damaging straight-line winds and a few tornadoes are possible. Some tornadoes in the eastern Carolinas may be strong, according to weather officials.
The tornado watch has been issued for Scotland, Hoke, Cumberland, and Wayne counties, and includes the cities of Clinton, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, Laurinburg, Raeford, Rocky Mount, Smithfield and Wilson.
According to weather officials, a tornado watch is just to let folks know to be on the lookout for a possible tornado in the area whereas a tornado warning is a notification that a tornado has been seen or picked up by radar.
In Richmond County, the National Weather Service is calling for showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds. High near 57 degrees. South wind around 18 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms, according to meteorologists.
