Laura Edington, 25, joined the Daily Journal as a staff writer earlier this month.

Edington was born and raised in Indian Land, South Carolina. As a senior project in high school, Edington put together a newspaper.

“I fell in love with journalism,” said Edington about her project. “I like asking questions and I love to write.”

Edington has diverse interests that include art. She received her bachelors degree in Journalism with a minor in Art History. After graduating from the University of South Carolina Upstate at Spartanburg in 2009, she freelanced for Foothills Spotlight Magazine, writing feature stories on art exhibits, museums and gallery crawls. She has also tried her hand at sports writing.

“I want to learn how to write about everything,” said Edington.

“I like being able to go out and talk to people, and look forward to talking to the people of Richmond County,” said Edington. “I like writing stories and have people read them, and I hope people like my stories. Everyone here has been really nice and helpful. I look forward to learning everything I can about this county and writing great articles.”

Initially, Edington’s beats will include Hamlet City Council; Richmond County Schools, Richmond Community College and education; police and court news; charities and fund raising; state and federal government; and health, hospitals and the County Health Board.
