Quit wasting our money

Editor,

A suggestion to our county school officials and others for saving money. Stop the door to door pickup of students going off to school and coming home.

I sometimes watch a bus stop four times on the same street two houses apart. Assign stops within a block of the students home and let the safety of the students be placed where it belongs, the parents.

Surely this will save thousands of dollars in fuel cost by taking away the limo service and making it once again a bus ride to school. I have also wondered why the students are not required to pay for a bus pass, we have no problems buying them four-wheelers and cell phone, how would a $10 per month bus pass affect their budget? Kids in the city don’t have school buses they ride the city buses and pay for a bus pass. If the parents don’t have the money, they can always drop the weekly visit to the nail parlor and tat parlor to provide transportation for their children to get to school.

Why does the Medicaid system pay for babies to be born to under-age children? Why cant it be for 18 and older? Trust me this would cut out a lot of 14 and 17 year olds from having babies. In these trying economic times we all have to make sacrifices. Lets begin with saving wasted money in our county.

I guess if the bus cannot come and get the children for school then how would parent without means get them there? Better yet, how could truency enforce attendance if there is no transportation? There are other was to cut the budget. And a further note, due to where I live, my daugter will not be "WALKING" to a bus stop where I cannot see her!! It is just an absurd thought!

Honestly??? I have a father who talked about riding his bike everywhere and delivering the newspaper, climbing telephone poles in the blizzard to call a loved one, and having no indoor plumbing. But seriously are you thinking when you write your comments? My son is 5 years old and NO TATTOS not even playones. No gaming system but yes we can afford one. BUT I WOULD NOT ALLOW MY CHILD TO WALK TO SCHOOL. I think someone would try to kidnap him or any of my young kids. TIMES ARE DIFFERENT and you need to recognize that first. Sure high school age kids their buses do not need to stop at every house and as they are younger then stops need to be closer which in many cases is what most school systems do. But do not get on here on YOUR BIG HORSE and ASSUME that all kids are getting their nails done or have tattos.

As Far as the ninth grade academy goes then over 9 years ago when the VOTE CAME UP TO THE RICHMOND COUNTY PUBLIC you should have voted THEN to bring 9th graders to the highschool but instead the RICHMOND RAIDER VOTING COUNTY voted for the elementary school. NOW you are finding out how we didn't need it. Well you could have asked your highschool teachers because they wanted to bring the 9th graders out to the school property then in their own building. BUT OH NO!@@@ Don't ruin the football team.

There is so much political crap that goes on this county because everyone knows everyone that we bring a non Richmond county Superintendent in and I pray to GOD this county doesn't try to use him. HE DID THE RIGHT THING to move our schools to K-5, 6-8 and as close as Richmond County Residents will let him 9-12. Lee County didn't have this problem they voted and got a second highschool just one year after the vote we made.

Want to blame parents?? What about parents dropping kids off at parades then leaving, dropping kids off at football games then leaving, dropping off 5 yr olds at teeball practice then leaving???? Then don't turn around blaming that child 100% for getting pregnant at 15? The generation before has some blame. How many parents are at local bars instead of home with their 12 yr old? Some of you think of yourself as perfect...... but you have your bones in your closet that you just hide better than others. And how low to call our kids FAT and get off their rears.........POINT BLANK it's expensive to run a school system it's unreal compared to running a house just take into the fact the difference turning off the computers over the weekend can save 100s in one month alone.

Actually Jethroandelliemae, I'm a man. What are you?

Actually, I agree with Mike about the four bus stops on the same street. That has to be hard on the bus driver and the bus equipment over a 9 month period.

But then you have to look at the mood of this country over the last 30 years. Let's look the other way when the students Gang Bang the bus driver for not doing what they tell the bus driver to do. If the kids complain to their parents, the parents complain to the school board, and since they are complaining to the school board and everyone hates the people on the school board, then it is obvious that the bus driver is at fault and should be punished.

So in order to avoid punishment again the bus driver drives the bus and keeps his or her mouth shut. Usually her. So the inmates are now in charge of the insane asylum.

I never got spanked when I was in school. Back in those days if you did something wrong the teacher or principal could bend you over a chair and blister your backside. But while I didn't want to get spanked in school, I also knew that when I got home and my grandfather found out I had done something that deserved a spanking then I was in for worse than what I got at school. I know, my older brother carved his name in the Ag teachers paddle so the teacher bent him over and used it on him. When he got home he thought he would tell my grandfather what the Ag teacher did and get the teacher in trouble. But surprise, surprise, out came a milking strap in the barn my brother got his behind set on fire. I learned by example.

Now a days, if the little darlings so much as get an angry look from the teacher the parents are up in arms demanding their head on a platter.

Why? Because we have listened to people criticize teachers so much we think they are second class citizens. We think they are over paid, lazy, un-educated, and un-concerned. Fortunately, the reverse is true. And we need to change the culture that takes their responsiblility away from them and put the real responsiblility back on the parents.

But then in order to do that we need to rebuild the middle class so that a family can spend more time together instead of having to work every available hour of the day just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.

When it comes down to it, People are Tired. Mike points that out in his letter. He is Tired.

But much of his letter is directed at the wrong cause and the wrong solution.

Yes O_M_G let me guess, everyone in the world is stupid, except you and Ron?

Thanks for clearing that up.

Unfortunately OMG he was pretending

Mike, that's just stupid.

You see, the same problems you're already talking about are just going to be brought up here.

Families that do pay their taxes and do what they're supposed to do are just going to get slammed again.

Then, those people already leeching off the systerm are just going to continue to do that. They're going to need to get some state-funded rate or reduced-fare bus passes.

Next time, at least pretend like you have some sense.

Kids nowdays are too babied so they can get back home and get to playing their Wii or the Playstation. Hey kids...you need to wear out them Keds or Nikes!Stop being whinny babies! Get off your rears and go outside and play. Maybe you won't be so fat eh? How bout that post eh Ron?

It is hilarious to read some of the comments when a letter is posted about education in this country.

I often wonder if people read their post before they hit the Post Comment button.

They criticize the schools, come up with suggestions they think will change things, and when you read the comment there are so many lazy spelling, sentence, and paragraph errors it cause you to wonder where they went to school. Did they just study football and the members of the opposite sex while they honored the halls of the learning institution?

Yes, I know that sometimes I make spelling and grammar errors. My fingers type faster than my brain can read, sometimes. And once in a while I miss a word or delete something and forget to restructure the whole sentence. But at least I try.

How can we, as adults, criticize the kids in school today if we don't at least lead by example. Do we think the kids don't read the letters and comments?

And if cutting off funding reduces humans from having sex and babies then how come there are so many more babies born during economic downturns? I don't think funding has anything to do with it. How about we come up with some comprehensive sex education? I not so sure there are all that many barns to get behind in Richmond County or anywhere else.

Crazy,

No one here is or would attack children, this is all about the parents taking responsibility for THEIR children. Did you have front door pickup when you went to school? This is not about pre-schoolers,or small children either,I am a grandfather and of course i worry about the safety of my 7 and 8 year old grandsons, who ride the bis everyday.Thsi is about the parents providing some effort in getting their children to and from school. We in this county are so used to having someone from the goverment fix all our problems we expect the local goverment to take care of OUR children. When I attened school I walked almost a half a mile each way, rain or shine cold or hot to get my education, our parents of today think that the county owes us everything including fromt door bus service to and from school. My grand kids go to a school in east rockingham, there is one kid who gets on the bus at school and rides it across the street to his house. The total distance is about 300 yeards, yet he rides the bus and of course the bus stops at his front door, across the street from the school. Thsi bus then travels down the school street and stops 4 times before reaching the end of the block, one child at each stop and you think this is the way for the school to conduct business? Like president Obama said we all have to make sacrafices and thats unamerican?

if you really want the scool board to save money don't worry about the buses look at the UNNESSARY building projects we have going on in this couinty, all the work at the ninth grade academy, is a good example of this in that we are remodeling a new school. why because someone wanted too, there was no real reason given, because the ninth graders should have been sent to the high school twenty years ago! other schools in the state do this why can't richmond county. I wonder if they include the number of ninth graders as high school studernts in order to keep thier 4AA rating for sports?

Wow, attacking folks through thier kids. That is really un-american. I know we have problems in this country, but leave the kids out of it, please.

I understand what Mr. Hall is speaking about. It is ridiculous the number of bus stops being made and these are not for the tiny little kids-they are for big jr. high and high school kids. What is wrong with them having to walk? Most of them are obese as it is and they need the exercise.

As far as the young girls having babies cut funding. That will slow it down.

Unbelievable. How many kids do the buses carry every day to and from schools? Tats and Nails? How many kids in Richmond County schools have tats and nails done? If that is the only luxury they can afford themselves, are you so narrow that you would deny them even that?

People who go around counting the mistakes they think others make, and then make it sound like money is being taken directly out of their pockets for in the form of taxes amaze me. Do you really think that all those people with their tats and their nails don't pay taxes?

I am glad my world is larger than yours, Mr. Hall. I pay taxes in Richmond County and I don't have children riding the bus or walking to school. Why don't you follow the bus that dropped of the kids and ask the bus driver why they do it. Maybe you will find that kids have been abducted or threatened in that neighborhood and the bus driver wants to make sure the kids are dropped off safely. Never can tell till you ask.
